How these numbers are worked out

Berths, not people. A call that has not sailed shows lower-berth capacity — what the ship is built to sleep. It is a property of the vessel, never a count of who came ashore. Where a ship has no lower-berth figure on record, the column is left blank.

Guests, once she has sailed. The guest figure is the one the port's own operations platform settles on for the call, in the same order the harbour bill uses: counted, then the ship's manifest, then the arrival report, then the booked figure. If none of those exist, the figure falls back to berths — and then the column says berths, not guests.

EPI is the Environmental Port Index, an independent score from DNV for that departure, on a scale of 0 to 100. It is a measurement of the call, not a verdict on the ship or the line, and it moves the harbour bill in both directions. A score usually lands about a day after departure; until it does the column is left blank — never a zero.

What the call left behind is shown in two parts: with the port, and with the valley around it. Both are rounded to the nearest 10,000 kroner before they are published. A + in front means at least one part of that total is not known, so the figure is a floor and the real number is higher. Individual businesses, rates and per-guest figures are never published — the columns are totals for the call and nothing below that.

Hours alongside is measured from the ship's own arrival and departure where the port has an AIS timestamp, and from the scheduled window where it does not. Where a timestamp disagrees with the scheduled window by more than the window can account for, the scheduled figure is published instead — a measurement we cannot stand behind is not put on the page.

Every call is scored

Skjolden prices the environment into the tariff: the Environmental Port Index scores every departing ship, and the score moves the bill — up to 25 % reduction for the cleanest calls, up to 60 % surcharge for the rest. Ships that don't report within 72 hours are assessed at zero points.

The money stays in the valley

Around 100 people work the season here and 80 % are local; more than 50 guides come from the villages around the fjord. The 450 m² quayside marketplace is free of charge for local vendors in the opening season — the excursion programme is built on some 30 local operators, not imported coaches.
