III. Detailed Tour Description
Your adventure begins at the pier in Skjolden, where you will board our comfortable bus and begin the scenic ascent from the shores of the world's longest fjord. As we travel through the lush Fortun valley, your guide will set the stage, sharing stories of the tough, resilient people who have called this place home for centuries—from the Viking shipbuilders to the first mountain guides.
The road soon begins to climb, weaving its way up the mountainside. We are now on the famous Sognefjellsvegen, an engineering marvel and designated National Tourist Route. The landscape transforms from green farmland to the stark, beautiful, and windswept terrain of the high alpine tundra. This is Jotunheimen, the Home of the Giants. Your guide will bring the Norse legends to life, telling tales of the colossal Jotner trolls who were said to sleep within these peaks.
As we approach the historic Turtagrø Hotel, a legendary base for mountaineers, the jagged spires of the Hurrungane range come into view. Here, you will hear the awe-inspiring story of William Cecil Slingsby, the English pioneer who, in 1876, climbed the "unclimbable" Store Skagastølstind, a mountain that locals believed was protected by ancient giants.
Continuing just ten minutes past Turtagrø, we arrive at our destination: the Oscarshaug viewpoint. Here, we will park and you can step out to experience the tour's grand finale. You are now standing directly opposite the Hurrungane massif, with nothing obstructing your view of its magnificent, chaotic peaks. It is a photographer's dream and a humbling spectacle of nature's raw power. This is the heart of the giants' kingdom, and from this spot, you have the best front-row seat.
After ample time for photos and to simply soak in the immense landscape, we will begin our peaceful descent. The journey down offers new perspectives and a chance to reflect on the epic scenery and stories, before returning you safely to the pier in Skjolden.
