III. Detailed Tour Description

Our adventure begins at the pier in Skjolden, the last outpost of civilization at the very end of the mighty Sognefjord. Here, guests will board our specialized mountain bus, uniquely designed to handle the thrilling roads ahead.

Our journey starts by tracing the shores of the tranquil Eidsvatnet lake, where your guide will point out the humble cabin where philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein found the silence to change the world. We’ll delve into the region's deep history, learning how the Vikings used the area's unique pine trees to build their ocean-faring longships and how the locals became the first mountain guides, forging paths across this wild landscape.

Soon, the real climb begins. We leave the main road and turn onto the Tindevegen, a private toll road so narrow and winding that vehicles over 10 meters are strictly forbidden. As our bus expertly navigates the hairpin turns, the landscape transforms from lush valley to the stark, raw beauty of the high alpine tundra. This is Jotunheimen, the Home of the Giants. Your guide will bring the Norse legends to life, telling tales of the colossal Jotner trolls who were said to sleep within the mountains, their roars the sound of avalanches and their icy breath the sudden, deadly blizzards.

The air thins as we approach the domain of the Hurrungane—"the noisy ones"—a cluster of Norway's wildest peaks. Here, we stop to hear the awe-inspiring story of William Cecil Slingsby, the English pioneer who, in 1876, climbed the "unclimbable" Store Skagastølstind. Guests will learn about the extreme, life-threatening conditions on the peak, where winter winds and -40°C temperatures create one of the most dangerous environments on Earth.

The bus journey culminates near the top of the pass. Here, guests will disembark for a guided walk. The trail to Berdalsnosi is a gentle, 15-minute hike across the open mountain terrain. The reward is one of Norway’s ultimate viewpoints. From this perch, 1300 meters above the sea, a stunning 360-degree panorama unfolds. Looking west, you gaze straight down the entire length of the Lustrafjord, following its path towards the ocean and spotting your ship far below. Turning east, your view is filled with the iconic, jagged peaks of Jotunheimen National Park—the highest mountains in all of Northern Europe. It is the perfect meeting place of fjord and mountain.

After time to soak in the views and capture photos, we begin the peaceful descent. The journey down offers new perspectives and a chance to reflect on the epic landscapes and stories, before returning guests safely to the pier in Skjolden.
